Important Update

Our March for Babies celebration is still on, but it looks a little different! We are rapidly preparing for a new, virtualized event that will be fun and engaging for everyone. This change in format aligns with the newly released CDC guidance for large events, to help ensure the safety and health of our participants. More details on our new format to come soon!

ABOUT MARCH FOR BABIES
We walk to give EVERY BABY a fighting chance. Thank you to all of our walkers, donors and volunteers who have accepted the challenge to help fight premature birth, birth defects and infant loss. We cannot achieve our mission each of you! The 2017 Greater Kansas City March for Babies will highlight the strength of families affected by premature birth, birth defects and the loss of a child, celebrate the strides we’ve made towards accomplishing our mission, and applaud the fundraising efforts of our donors. On Sunday, May 7, more than 8,000 individuals will come together in the Power & Light District to support the March of Dimes. Our goal is to raise a total of $600,000 for a healthier for all babies. Festival area and registration opens at 8:00am | Opening ceremony begins at 10:00am with the 2+ mile walk immediately following. Parking is available in various downtown parking garages: the Power & Light District garage entering from 13th between Grand and Walnut and the H&R Block building garage.

2017 Greater Kansas City Mission Family

Meet the Nelsons: Chad, Sarah, Mallory, Drew and Carly. When their first born, Mallory, was 1 year old, Chad and Sarah decided to grow their family and discovered they were having twins. They were thrilled to learn they were having twin boys, yet nervous about the risks and complications of having multiples. At 25 weeks, Sarah developed a condition where one baby’s blood supply was being limited, while the other was being overloaded. It’s called TTTS. Laser surgery corrected the problem, but only temporarily. At 27 weeks, TTTS returned and the babies were delivered that day. Sarah was terrified at the prospect of having two premature babies – but was not ready for the news that one baby would not survive. Baby Benjamin, passed away less than an hour after birth. Chad and Sarah learned that Benjamin was the twin who was overloaded with fluid, causing heart failure. Meanwhile, Baby Andrew was whisked away to the NICU for care. Drew spent 79 days in the NICU before coming home. The Nelsons remember facing the unexpected turns in Drew’s health all while grieving and planning the burial for their other son. Drew came home just before their due date. He was on oxygen and monitors for several months. Today, he is a healthy, ornery 3 year old and now big brother to little sister, Carly.
