The Summers Family

After three years of trying to get pregnant, Kelly and Richard discovered they were having twins. The ecstatic couple was told about 6 months into the pregnancy that Baby B was not growing as well as Baby A. After going to a fetal specialist for check for twin to twin transfusion, they discovered that it was not TFF but that Baby B had intermittent blood flow in her umbilical cord—she was not getting the full support she needed to grow. Ultimately, the intermittent flow would reserve and take blood from the baby back to the placenta. This could result in the death of Baby B and because they were identical twins, Baby A was also at risk. Kelly was immediately put into the hospital for daily observation and given rounds of Surfactant, hoping the blood to reverse to deliver the babies via cesarean. For six weeks, she stayed in bed at the Gwinnett Medical Center High Risk Unit. On April 14, the ultrasound discovered a consistent reversal of blood flow in Baby B’s umbilical cord. Both baby girls were born at 29 weeks gestation. Richard was able to see his daughters while Kelly was forced to stay in bed, lying there in the perpetual dark, listening to hear her daughters’ cry, trying to catch a glimpse of her children as they were pushed out of the room in isolates. Quinn was born weighing 2lbs 5.5oz and Brooklyn weighed only 1lb 11.5oz. The girls had taken similar but different paths of survival. Surprisingly, Brooklyn was doing better than Quinn, as she was able to breath on her own. Unfortunately, the girls both experienced setbacks constantly during their NICU stay. After several months in the NICU, the girls were healthy enough to go home but the story doesn’t end there. Over the next couple of years, appoints with specialists and therapists were necessary to ensure their health remained optimal. Today, both Quinn and Brooklyn are healthy, happy six year olds and older sisters to little brother Lawson and younger sister Eversen. Both girls enjoy riding mules, playing softball, swimming, and family time on Sundays.
