This is our story:
At 28 weeks pregnant I experienced an abruption which placed both my unborn son and myself in a very dangerous situation. If the abruption worsened it could mean one or both of our lives. Initially, the medical team thought an emergenvy delivery would be needed. My husband and I were determined that we would do everything in our power to save our son. We asked the Lord to be with the many members of the medical team responsible for our treatment and help us to be strong.
Our medical team at Shands UF was wonderful! I was admitted at 28 weeks and the doctors were aiming for me to make it to 32 weeks to deliver. I was not satisfied with the idea of delivering my son at such a premature age. I did not want my son to be born premature. I did not want him to stay in the hospital after his birth if at all possible. As I approached 32 weeks, I asked the doctors if there was a medical reason that I could not try to make it to 34 weeks. They replied and said no reason. So we ventured on. Weeks 34, 35 and 36 came and went...and no baby. I finally allowed them to induce me and deliver my son at 37 weeks exactly. He was born on 2/12/08 weighing 5 lbs 4 oz and 17 3/4 inches long. He was perfectly healthy. He never had to spend anytime in the NICU or nursery. We went home two days later and he is flourishing. We held out and had a full term healthy baby boy who surpassed the odds!
The Mother-Baby Unit at Shands UF is where my husband and I spent 60 days of our life before the birth of our son. We are so thankful for their efforts to help us prevent a premature birth. Rhett, our son, was chosen by the Unit as their team ambassador for the walk, Please help the team and help others have an outcome like ours!
The March of Dimes has changed the name of its biggest event to March for Babies. It's a great change because it makes it very clear exactly who I am walking for -- all babies. I am very excited to be a part of the “first” March for Babies; please support my participation.
Although the name of this signature event changed, the mission did not. The March of Dimes champions the needs of moms and babies in our community and across the nation. The money we raise for March for Babies will support lifesaving research, services, education and advocacy that help babies get a healthy start.

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
