Ava and Ella Stockton

The Stockton Family: Robert, Kelli, Ava and Ella...At 28 weeks pregnant, I had just begun weekly visits to the doctor. The night my husband and I attended our second birthing class, my water broke. Not knowing the severity of the situation, I remained calm, while my husband raced around trying to pack my things. At the hospital, we learned I was two inches dilated and having contractions, although I could not feel them. My primary OBGYN was on vacation so we saw several different doctors. I was given magnesium to slow the contractions; but was given too much and got very ill. After being taken off of the magnesium, Ava and Ella made their appearance via emergency cesarean section on August 13th at 4:00 a.m. "Thirteen" is actually a lucky number in our family! Our wedding anniversary is September 13, my lucky number is 13, my high school and college volleyball number was 13...so naturally, the girls wanted to follow tradition! I held both of my girls that night using the "kangaroo: skin-to-skin method and used a small mirror so I could see their tiny faces. When we got a call that Ava was bleeding from the bowel and was being transported to University of Missouri Women's and Children's Hospital, my husband and I asked that her sister Ella go along. We couldn't bear the thought of them being apart, even if it was just down the street. The girls did have some small bumps in the road at the very beginning, but I was told that "I grew them very well for the time I had them" in me. They just needed to grow in the real world. At just 2 pounds, 7 ounces and 2 pounds, 12 ounces, they were the smallest little beings I had ever seen. I wanted to spend every minute at the hospital to see all the little milestones they were hitting. I was there so much that the nurses would regularly tell me to go home and rest. After two full months of being in the hospital, Ava and Ella finally came home. That was a very hard winter, as we could not take them out except for doctor visits. Ava and Ella are now happy, healthy 3 1/2 year olds who are into everything! They consistently amaze the doctors, researchers and therapists because the girls were expected to have developmental and speech delays. They are actually excelling beyond their chronological age! The girls continue to amaze us daily and will forever be our little miracle babies.
