Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. Premature birth can happen wittout warning and for no known reason. The March of Dimes is funding research into the causes of prematurity; educating women of child bearing age about risk reduction and warning signs of preterm labor; providing information and emotional support to affected families and advocating to expand health care coverage for woman and infants
