Today in the U.S., 1 in every 8 babies will be born prematurely, and the problem is getting worse. Some of them won't survive, and others will have health and developmental problems that could last a lifetime. Did you know that the average hospital cost for a premie birth is $77,000, compared to $1300 for a full-term birth? This is huge. Our national ambassador this year is from right here in Gainesville, and she was "million dollar baby" saved by Shands NICU. The funds we raise in WalkAmerica support research that saves babies' lives and helps ensure they are healthy, and many of the funds are used right here in north central Florida.
The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
