It is our favorite time of year when we gather the troops and form Liam’s Legion to walk in the annual March for Babies, to benefit the March of Dimes.
Liam was born 6 weeks premature due to Kim's rising blood pressure as a result of pre-eclampsia. Liam came into the world on April 14th, 2004 at 4 lbs 14 oz. Liam spent the next 11 days in the St. Peter's NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). He had some medical needs addressed as a result of his prematurity but those have been addressed by PT, OT, and speech therapy. Today, Liam is a very bright student. His grades continue to be tremendous and he has taken great interest in his learning. He was recruited to be a part of his school’s Odyssey of the Mind team. Liam was a vital part to his team placing 3rd in the competition. He thrived in utilizing his design skills while gaining leadership skills in the process. Liam is also taking part in the Math Olympiad program at school and getting exposed to advanced math problems. While he has decided to retire from his baseball career he recently started taking up bowling and made great strides with that.
It's because of the joy that Liam brings us that we walk each year. Not every family if fortunate to come home with their premature child. 50% of the time there is no understanding of what caused the child to be born premature and when you consider 1 in 8 children are born premature, the numbers get to be staggering. The March of Dimes provided the training, education, and research for the staff at St. Peter's to provide Liam the care he needed to survive. They continue to support research that will hopefully help Mikayla avoid the same pre-eclampsia that Kim suffered from. We continue to support the March of Dimes so that every parent can experience the same happy ending like Kim and I have.
