Survivors: Cadie & Maddie's Story

Theirs is a true survivor story. Born at only 26 weeks, Cadence and Madeline came into this world with the battle for life ahead of them. At only 2 pounds 2 ounces and 1 pound 13 ounces, respectively, their bodies were tiny and fragile. At only four days old, they each underwent surgery to close a hole in their hearts. Both Cadence and Madeline suffered Intraventricular Hemorrhages, bleeding in their brains. Cadence suffered complications, including hydrocephalus, that, at just over a month old, required a device to be putin her brain to drain fluid. They both struggled with immature lungs and, as a result, Cadence developed Chronic Lung Disease. Both girls developed Retinopathy of Prematurity, common in preemies their size, which can lead to blindness if not treated quickly. At three and a half months old and a little over 6 pounds each, both girls came home, more pain and fight behind them than most people experience in a lifetime...but they had survived.

Many people attribute premature birth to something the mother has done. Perhaps she drank, smoked, or did drugs. Maybe she just didn′t take care of herself or get any prenatal care. In my case, nothing could be further from the truth. I was the epitome of health during my pregnancy. Though, I did miss something. I missed the signs of premature labor because I didn′t think it could happen to me.

Now, Cadence and Madeline are energetic, vibrant three-year-old′s who love to have tea parties, read books, and play dress-up. Madeline is a social butterfly who can befriend just about anyone. Cadence is our tender heart who is caring and loving to everyone. Both girls have surpassed developmental expectations and test above their age.

The March of Dimes CAN make a difference.
