Shaye 1 day old, 3lbs 1/2 oz, 16 inches

Today in the U.S., 1 in every 8 babies will be born prematurely. Some of them won't survive, and others will have health problems that could last a lifetime. The funds we raise in WalkAmerica support research that saves babies' lives.
At 10pm on June 1, 2004 my water broke 5 weeks too early. It being my first child I didn't know what to expect. I already had my bag packed but I really wasn't expecting this so early. We head to the hospital and they set me up in a L & D room. 9 hours, 2 doses of pitocin later and I am still only dilated to 1/2 inch. After numerous exams, I'm not sure how it went un-noticed but they found out that I have a barrier that divides my uterus. It's not completely two uteri but far enough that I will never be able to have a normal delivery. They rush me for an emergency c-section and 5 minutes later I had my angel. Shaye weighed 3 lbs 1/2 oz and was 16 inches long. She was in the NICU for 36 days. Since graduating from the NICU we've had some ups and downs. She is still a bit smaller than others her age, and has some trouble paying attention at times, but she sees, breathes, walks and talks just fine and to that we are extremely thankful. Shaye will turn 8 years old in June and not a day goes by that I don't thank God, her doctors and the March of Dimes for being there for her when she was so small and defenseless.
Please think of Shaye and all the other babies of the world born prematurely before turning away from WalkAmerica. You just may save a life!
Thanks all for helping!
Steph
