Sofia was born April 18, 2006 with a CDH

The first time I participated in WalkAmerica, now March for Babies, for the March of Dimes was in 2006 while my daughter Sofia was still in the NICU battling a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). CDH occurs when there is a hole in the diaphram which allows for the abdominal organs to move up in to the chest cavity. This leaves little to no room for the lungs to develop. Sofia had a hole in the left side of her diaphram and her stomach, liver, intestine and spleen were in her chest cavity. After 7 1/2 weeks in the NICU, I got to bring Sofia home! I am so happy that this year Sofia will be joining us for our 7th walk!

Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. The funds we raise in March for Babies support research that saves babies' lives.
