My Miracle Baby - Ellery Cherie' Case

Our family is thrilled and very proud to represent the March of Dimes as the 2010 St. Paul March for Babies Ambassador Family!!

My daughter, Ellery had to be born early at 33 weeks. While I was pregnant with her, she developed life-threatening conditions called Non-Immune Hydrops Fetalis and Congenital Chylothorax. She had fluid throughout her body, surrounding her heart and lungs making it impossible for her to breathe when she was born. Because of these critical medical conditions, Ellery was only given a 5% chance to survive.

Ellery battled numerous conditions since birth, including pulmonary hypertension. She is with us today because of a March of Dimes grant given to two doctors. Their brilliant work led to the approval of nitric oxide to treat newborns with persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), life-threatening high blood pressure in the baby's lungs that often interferes with breathing. Ellery suffered from PPHN her first days of life and almost lost her life because of this diagnosis. She would not be here today if she had not had nitric oxide therapy.

Ellery endured a 28 day NICU stay, along with four stays in the PICU at Children's Hospital in St. Paul. She continued to heal at home for three months with the help of medical equipment to help her breathe. Ellery received a clean bill of health on February 12, 2009!

We can also thank the March of Dimes for our three year old son, Wyatt, as he was born healthy and full-term!

I am so grateful to the March of Dimes, and every thing they do to prevent premature birth and newborn illness. We do not want any other family to endure the difficulties we have in watching Ellery struggle for her life.
