On April 10, 2008 I gave birth to twins. Charlton Jr. weighed in at 1 lbs 6 ounces and Savannah weighed 1lbs 8 ounces, born 4 months premature. During their 4 1/2 months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit they both had multiple life saving surgeries and a number of other life saving procedures. Our daughter Savannah had a severe bleed in the brain and the doctors only gave them a 16% chance of survival. But today, I am proud to say that they will be turning 4 on April 10th and are doing very well.
The money we raise for March for Babies will help:
- support all-important research offering preventions and solutions for babies born too soon or with birth defects
- educate women on things they can do to increase their chances of having a healthy baby
- provide comfort and information to families with a newborn in intensive care
- push for newborn screening and health insurance for all pregnant women and children
. The prematurity rate has increased over 31% in the last 20 years and continues to rise at an alarming rate.
One of the things that The March of Dimes funded was the research on surfactant therapy. This is a drug that helps aid the lungs. Both of our babies received this therapy in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which proved to be very successful.
