I used to walk in the March of Dimes walk, back in the day when I wasn't even married. I never would have guessed that it would impact my life in such a personal way. Here's a little bit about my story...
My twins were born at 27 weeks. Samantha weighing 1lb 13ozs and Stephen 1lb 7ozs. That was almost 6 years ago. Samantha spent 3 months in the NICU coming home on oxygen and monitors. The hardest part about her home coming was that we had to leave Stephen in the hospital, clinging to life. While Samantha was getting ready to be discharged, Stephen took a turn for the worse and developed pneumonia. He would end up spending 4 more months in the NICU. And when he finally came home, he was on oxygen, monitors and 14 medicines. I think back and I truly don't know how we did it for all those months. All I know is if it were not for family, friends and the NICU staff at Medical Center of Plano, we could not have endured. I will forever be grateful. Today, some of those memories have faded, but not all. Some images are burned into my brain. Images that hopefully one day, no mom will have to see their tiny newborn being shaken by the ocillator that was breathing for them or their son become unrecognizable because he caught pneumonia and doubled his size due to the fluid build up in his body. And I credit the research done by the March of Dimes for all the advancements they have founded that allowed my precious miracles to survive and now thrive!
So, now, we walk as a family. We started last year and had a great time. We now walk for OUR babies who were born too soon. The money we raise for March for Babies will help:
- support all-important research offering preventions and solutions for babies born too soon or with birth defects
- educate women on things they can do to increase their chances of having a healthy baby
- provide comfort and information to families with a newborn in intensive care
- push for newborn screening and health insurance for all pregnant women and children
