My son's name is Devin and he is 6 years old. This is his friend Lilyona. She is 7 years old and I am grateful she has overcome so many obstacles and become his friend. Lily was born 15 weeks early and weighed 1lb 10oz and 12 inches long and lived in the NICU for 4 months. We are trying to raise money for the March of Dimes walk.

The March of Dimes research money founded surfactant and nitric oxide which helps your lungs when you are born early like Lily was. Early babies suffer from respiratory distress syndrome and will be at risk for RSV. Surfactant helped saved her life. She was on a respiratory ventilator, then c-pap and high flowing oxygen to low flowing oxygen pretty much the whole time she was at the hospital to help her breath.

When you are born early there is a valve in your heart that is left open and if the medicine does not close it you have to have heart surgery. Lucky for Lily the medicine worked. She also had bleeding on the brain which was monitored closely and premature eye disease which required laser surgery. March of Dimes funds are used for research to try and prevent prematurity and treatment for premature babies like Lily.

Lily is currently doing great and just received some advanced scores from school. She still has to drink whole milk because she is small for her age but growing daily. She takes prilosec daily for reflux and wears glasses for nearsightedness caused by the premature eye disease. She wears inserts in her shoes called polly wogs but has graduated from braces. She graduated from speech and physical therapy. Lily also has two cousins who were born prematurely and are thriving! If you would like to make a donation to help save babies please do so here. To walk with us please contact Miranda or Becky Hill at 655-9404.

The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

Your gift will support March of Dimes research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. And it will be used to bring comfort and information to families with a baby in newborn intensive care.
