My daughter, Lauren Ruth, was born on November l2, 2002 at
24 weeks gestation, as I had developed a severe case of pre-eclampsia and HELLP
syndrome. She weighed just one pound, two ounces, and spent l9 weeks in the
hospital. During that time, she had ROP surgery (which stands for retinopathy of
prematurity basically issues with her retinas). She came home at four pounds,
15 ounces, and needed oxygen for mild BPD (bronchiopulmonary dysplasia), lung
issues from being on a respirator for such a long time.
Today, she is an active one-year-old who is beginning to crawl. She pulled up
on the furniture last week, which is a big issue for us. She has been doing
physical therapy for months, so this is a huge accomplishment. Its no wonder
the March of Dimes sponsors a walk every year to support cures for birth
defects. Every step no matter how small is a move in the right direction.
