The McCorkle Family

Phoenix was born at 25 weeks gestation weighing 1 pound, 4 ounces. I had been diagnosed with preeclampsia in my previous pregnancy eight years ago so I knew that there was a strong possibility that I would have that diagnosis again. What I wasn’t prepared for was to be put on bedrest at 23 weeks only to deliver two weeks later. After what I thought would be my normal trip to the doctor for a blood pressure check, I was sent to the hospital to be monitored. Labs were drawn and the waiting game began. My midwife, Jamie came in and let me know that I was going into HELLP syndrome and that my baby would need to be delivered immediately. Phoenix was delivered via C-section and after a quick look at her on the monitor above me she was taken to the NICU. In the beginning, she was able to breathe with the help of a CPAP but was soon intubated. Phoenix eventually experienced a pneumothorax and had a chest tube placed. That was only the beginning of our lengthy NICU stay. After 106 days Phoenix was discharged. Being able to stay at Catawba for the entire NICU stay was a blessing. We acquired friends, we made the news, and we spent most the holidays there, as well as Alfred and my anniversary. We are so grateful for Dr. Berry and Dr. Wellman and of course, each of the amazing nurses. With love, Alfred, Paige, Peyton, and Phoenix
