The Broadway Family

At 39 years old, my husband and I were very surprised to find out that we were expecting our second child. Due to my advanced age, my pregnancy was considered high-risk. Under the care of my wonderful primary M.D.- OB/GYN, Dr. Greg Mitchell in Savannah TN, I was immediately referred to Mid-South Perinatal Associates in Jackson, TN for regular ultrasounds. My pregnancy seemed to progress normally until week 25. I experienced a blood pressure spike that cause me to be admitted to the hospital. Once my blood pressure was stabilized, I was able to return home. Then at 27 weeks I was admitted back in the hospital. When I arrived I was taken into a room and a monitor was placed on me. Only after a couple of hours after arriving, I was taken to a room in labor and delivery. My baby’s heartbeat quickly dropped and my doctor said Let’s go. I was whisked away in seconds to have an emergency C section due to having a complete placental abruption. I vividly remember my last thoughts before being put under. Was my baby going to live? Was I going to live? What about my daughter, Belle? What will my husband do? When I woke and heard what had taken place I was so grateful to Dr. Roberts that I had no idea that Judd would be fighting for his life. Dr. Roberts and all the surgical staff and to the amazing JMCGH NICU Team worked with my baby for 13 minutes to resuscitate him. After 13 minutes he had been brought back to life! However, I did not realize the long and difficult journey ahead of us. I had no idea that Judd would be fighting for his life. Judd developed a brain bleed after birth. Three days after he was born, my husband and I were explained the severity and risks of the brain bleed. Judd had a grade 4 bilateral bleed. We spent 64 days in the JMCGH NICU unit. During that time, we were loving and praying for our sweet boy, while the incredible doctors and staff monitored Judd’s bleed, his breathing and overall health. After 64 long days and sleepless nights we were able to bring Judd home on February 12, 2018. Judd has been through two brain surgeries since our stay in the NICU, an ETV and a VP Shunt surgery. Incredibly, he continues to grow and reach milestone after milestones. Judd has three therapy appointments each week and amazingly continues to keeps a smile on the faces of everyone that he meets. We are so honored to be serving as the 2019 Jackson Ambassador Family, and to have the opportunity to give back to an organization whose mission is inspired by all babies, those born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive. The research conducted via the March of Dimes and the work of so many medical professionals is a wonderful and important partnership. The medical enhancements provided in part with the March of Dimes has made Judd’s prematurity journey a success. Together we can make this a reality for many other families just like ours.
