Meet our Ambassador Family

The Olmos Family

Meet the Olmos Family: Tony, Suzie & 2-year-old daughter, Layla The morning following an uneventful 28-week scan, Suzie woke up and noticed that she was leaking fluid, she was advised to go straight to hospital for evaluation. The doctor confirmed it was amnionic fluid and Suzie was immediately admitted to the hospital. Ten days after Suzie had been admitted their daughter, Layla was born at 29 weeks, 6 days, and weighed 3 lb. 3 oz. Layla was a fighter from day one. She needed vigorous support and interventions with breathing, but quickly showed signs of improvement so her support was reduced. At 4 weeks, Layla’s progress was halted when she had an aspiration event that caused her to need oxygen support once again. This event was followed by a transfusion needed to treat severe anemia. It was another 4 weeks of struggles to wean Layla off oxygen support, learn how to eat, swallow, breathe and yet another transfusion was needed. After 61 long days in the NICU, Layla was finally off oxygen and ready to come home. Layla just turned 2, she is happy, healthy and keeps her parents on their toes. She is often referred to as the “Happiest Baby” people have ever met. She is a true testament to perseverance and strength.
