The Stoneburg Family with Isla

I woke up with some right rib pain on Monday 10/22/2018, 28 weeks pregnant. I decided to work from home and rest with my legs up since we had just visited an apple festival the day prior. I called my Dr. and asked to come in for a quick check-up, and received a late afternoon appointment. I brought my mother-in-law, as she lived in NY and had not yet had a chance to hear the baby’s heartbeat. I fully expected the nursing staff to pat me on the head and say “You’re just having growing pains, you’ll be fine”…..boy was I wrong! My blood pressure, which was normally extremely consistent at around 121 (sys) was over 180 and I had protein in my urine. After 6 more blood pressure checks and a basic exam, they sent me to the hospital. Do not pass go….do not collect $100 or a cheeseburger for dinner! We grabbed by husband and father-in-law and headed to the hospital. I was in shock…I felt fine…why was I going to the hospital??? At the hospital, they monitored me for a few hours. My blood pressure was consistently high, lots of urine protein, but the baby was not in distress. I was diagnosed with preeclampsia and checked in to be watched overnight. By the morning, I saw my doctor and was told that I would be staying on hospital bedrest for the next 7 weeks. Another shock….nothing was ready…the nursery wasn’t done…the carseat wasn’t installed….no one at work was ready for me to leave…what was I going to do? The only thing that helped was knowing that Isla was a happy little camper in there! I spent the next 4 days munching on hospital food, befriending the nurses, and trying to convince someone to let me get a shower. I had lots of visitors (friends and doctors), snacks galore, and received 2 rounds of corticosteroids to strengthen Isla’s lungs. I went on short walks to the bathroom and around my bed, but I was dying to go outside! I had a monitor strapped to my belly to track Isla. The poor nurses had to come in often to adjust it because Isla would kick the monitor and then “swim” away from it. The days were long, but at least Isla was safe and happy. Thursday night (10/25), I had incredible back pain on my right side. I assumed it was from the bedrest, but it turned out to be my liver failing. Did you know that your liver can “hurt”? I sure didn’t! After lots of blood work, into the early morning hours of Friday, it was determined that I had developed HELLP syndrome. My doctor arrived around 8am and reviewed my lab work. My kidneys were starting to decline, and the doctor told us that the baby was going to be coming today. Shortly after 9am, Isla Magnolia was born at a whooping 2lbs, 8.6 oz. Isla spent 42 days in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) NICU, where she was loved on and cared for by their incredible staff. From day one, Isla fought hard to grow up! She ended up with a PICline because she pulled out her IV too many times. She started bottle feeding early because she pushed her feeding tube out with her tongue over and over again. She was moved off the cannula to room air by Thanksgiving because she pulled out her canula. She thrived in the NGMC NICU environment. Each day we celebrated the tiny improvements and advancements she made, documenting them along the way. On December 6th, 2018, Isla came home weighing in just over 4lbs and with no major health issues.
