Angela’s day started out with a scheduled, relaxing prenatal massage, which quickly turned into labor pains and a trip to the ER. Despite the medical team stopping Angela’s contractions and administering steroids to help Zoey’s lungs develop faster, it was only a couple days and a few pushes later that baby Zoey made her arrival. Born six and a half weeks early, Zoey came out screaming with an oxygen level of 97%. The medications administered to Angela helped Zoey’s lungs develop enough that she was able to breathe on her own without the help of oxygen. However, she was still fighting for a healthy start at life. She was on a feeding tube for over a week, suffered jaundice and spend the majority of her time in the NICU in an incubator. Zoey was the only baby in the NICU during her stay, making it a very quiet and lonely time for Angela and her husband, Robert. As the nurses would handle Zoey to reposition her, she would growl at them; the Holtgraves later learned this is something uncommon in preemies and still get a chuckle from the memory. After two long weeks in the NICU, Zoey was able to go home with her family. Today, she is a healthy, vibrant three year old who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to tell you what she likes and doesn’t like. She loves to dance, dressing up in her Disney
princess dresses, watching Disney movies and playing with her older brother, RJ, and their two big dogs.
