The Nichols Family

Imagine being perfectly healthy and newly pregnant for the first time. Then imagine, seemingly out of nowhere, your life is turned completely upside down because of complications with your pregnancy. Now, imagine having that happen to you with all four of your children. The March of Dimes was critical in supporting us when this happened to me and my husband. My name is Adriana Nichols and I want to share with you the birth stories of our amazing children. On July 1, 2010 my husband and I had just closed on our first house and we were moving in to start our happy family. I was pregnant with our daughter, who was due in October. We were overjoyed. We were planning on having a midwife, and because of my family history, I imagined that labor would need to be induced. That's what happened with my mom, and her mom, and her mom. I would joke about how I was going to be pregnant forever. On July 5, I just didn't feel right; I could tell something was wrong. My husband works nights, so he got home around 4:30 on the morning of July 6. I was in the restroom, visualizing myself having our baby on the toilet. I told my husband we needed to go to the hospital immediately. The whole way there I was trying calm myself down. I was thinking, "They're going to send me home; I'm being a big baby; it's probably just gas or regular pregnancy pains, and I just can't handle it. They're probably going to laugh at me and everything is going to be fine." When we got to the hospital, it must have been obvious how much pain I was in and that everything was not fine. The nurse at the front desk got me into a room immediately and started taking my vital signs. In what seemed to me like a few minutes later, a doctor came in and checked to see if I was dilated. With no emotion at all he said, "you're in labor, you are 8cm dilated, and you're going to have this baby now." Then he got up and left the room. What did he mean I was going to have my baby now? I was only 25 weeks pregnant--how could I have a baby now? Scared doesn't even describe the emotions my husband and I were having. Before I knew it we had more nurses, doctors, and staff members in the delivery room than I had ever seen in my life. The NICU doctor grabbed my hand, introduced herself, and said she would do everything she could for our baby girl. She said, "you want to get her out as quickly as possible, and you want to hear her cry. If you hear her cry, she will be okay." ---Join us at kickoff and the March for Babies to meet this family and find out the rest of her story.---
