Sophia was born at 27 weeks at 1 pound 2.5 ounces. She was in the hospital for 93 days. She had 5 blood transfusions, 3 spinal tap, had her blood drawn about 35 times, had 6 X rays, two pic lines, 18 eye exams (in the hospital, total so far 29), and two different types of bed. She was in an incubator for 64 days. She started with the humidity at 75% and the heat at 85 degrees and it took her 63 days to get it low enough to maintain her own body temperature. Due to her weight being so low we paid a lot of attention to how she was growing everyday. We watched her grow an ounce some days and others she'd lose and ounce. Slowly but surely Sophia would gained weight but it was just that, slow. At 34 weeks Sophia was diagnosed with premature retinopathy (ROP). From that point she would have an increased in eye exams, which at this age is very hard. Their eyes have to be clamped open. Her ROP progressively got worse so when she got to stage 4 ROP (stage 5 is the worst) she ended up being treated with a shot into each of her eyes, Sophia has had a rough start to life. She didn't let anything that happened in the NICU or since stop her. She is just as our team same says "FIERCE". When you look at her today it is hard to believe she had a 20-35% chance of living. She beat the odds and continues to do so.
