2024 Ambassador Family

The Brey Family

On September 1st, 2017, Lisa and Charlie Brey found themselves in the Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women's Hospital ER at just over 22 weeks pregnant, anticipating a routine visit and expecting to return home after a few simple tests. However, upon arrival, they received the unexpected news that Lisa was dilated, and her water had broken. They were told that Lisa would be delivering their baby within 24-72 hours, nearly 18 weeks (about 4 months) before their due date. After thoughtful discussions with various doctors, Lisa and Charlie made the courageous decision to stay at the hospital under observation in the hope of prolonging the pregnancy and saving their baby. Eighteen days later, their precious Nina Hope entered the world at 24 weeks and 5 days, weighing a mere 1 pound 9 ounces. The subsequent 127-day NICU stay was a challenging journey - one they would not wish upon anyone - but a journey for which they remain profoundly grateful. They witnessed their tiny warrior's daily fight for survival as she surpassed every statistical expectation. Their remarkable journey was made possible by the unwavering support of incredible nurses, doctors, family, and friends. Among the critical factors contributing to Nina's positive outcome was the use of Surfactant therapy, a groundbreaking intervention developed by the March of Dimes. This therapy played a crucial role in supporting Nina's lung development and overall well-being during her time in the NICU. Today Nina is a joyous, healthy, loving 6-year-old. She is thriving in school and loves playing soccer and dancing. Those who know Nina see that her favorite part of life is to spend time with others, especially her younger brother William and sister Emersyn. Lisa and Charlie say that March of Dimes has been a guiding light for the family throughout their challenging journey. March of Dimes’ longstanding partnership with Prentice Women's Hospital's NICU proved instrumental. The organization's relentless mission to advocate for all mothers and babies, striving to end preventable preterm birth, infant mortality, and maternal health risks, is a cause for which the Breys are forever grateful. Nina Hope stands as a living miracle. The Breys are profoundly thankful to the March of Dimes and hope to contribute to the organization’s mission and its profound impact on families like theirs.
