Why I walk

Wow, can you believe this is my thirteenth year raising money for March of Dimes? In that time, they've found a cause for Retinopathy of Prematurity, which compromised my son's vision. The money that we've raised will help so many of the tiniest kids have a better chance to see! Who knows what breakthrough will be next?

Since I started raising money in 2006, together we're responsible for over $40,000 that the March of Dimes has used in supporting research into causes of prematurity and birth defects, promoting the adoption of proven therapies, supporting legislation to protect babies, and providing support for families whose babies are born too soon, or with congenital defects. Every year, I am dumbfounded by the support from my friends, family, co-workers, and (especially) my MousePlanet family. The people who read the stories I wrote and listened to the podcasts I recorded have been stupendously generous in supporting my fundraising to support this cause.

Let's see if we can raise another $3,000 this year! So much of the money that we raise comes from donations of $50 or less. If you think that you can't donate enough to be significant, that's not so! Every dollar counts, because the dollars add up! Please give what you can to help those babies who need the most help! As always, thank you so much for your support.

For more on why I walk, you can visit my old blog post (now a few years old, but still appropriate), but here's the short-short version: My first son died five minutes after he was born. If it weren't for the March of Dimes, my second son would have likely faced the same fate. Through the March of Dimes' push to have surfactant and decadron therapies used when premature birth is unavoidable, they saved my second son's life. My first son wasn't that lucky. There's still a hole in my heart from losing him that will never go away. My second son survived, thrived, and is now attending college on the way to making his dreams come true!

My sons are only two of the millions of stories to be told about premature babies. Thousands are born every day. Some are lucky, like my second son. Some are not. Many who survive still suffer from many medical conditions and need a great deal of help to live what even approximates normal lives. Parents should take their children home from the hospital, not to the cemetery. Every dollar counts. Please give generously.

Your gift matters

Funds raised in March for Babies support research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. And they will be used to bring comfort and information to families with a baby in newborn intensive care.
