Our prematurity experience was more than 12 years ago, but it touches us every single day.
In September 2011, our twins were born more than three months early, our daughter weighing 15 ounces, her brother 22 ounces.
Our tiny girl Jaina died after two days of kidney disease and infection. Cade spent four bumpy months in the NICU before coming home -- something that wouldn't have happened without March of Dimes-funded research that developed surfactant therapy.
He's now a 12-year-old middle schooler with a big personality and a beautiful heart. We can't imagine life without him.
