Nothing prepares a parent for news that their baby will have a 50% chance of surviving when born. That was the scenario we were faced with in May of 2011 as Nadine was admitted into the hospital at 24 weeks pregnant. Our daughter, Natalie, would be born two days later at 1lb, 7oz and 12 inches long when attempts to delay her delivery were unsuccessful. The next ninety-three days would be a roller coaster of ups and downs that tested our patience and faith. From minutes after her delivery when she received an Apgar score of 9 out of 10, to the first few days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) when she received doses of surfactant to help her immature lungs, to the many tests/screens/procedures she would endure during her hospitalization, we were exposed to various benefits that were direct and indirect results of years of advancements made possible by the March of Dimes®. Although we were not aware of these links to the March of Dimes at the time, we have grown to appreciate the significant advancements in technology, education, and care afforded to thousands of families each year as a result of the organization’s work. And thanks to those advancements in medical care, Natalie is now thriving as a toddler. We are hopeful that any lasting impacts of Natalie’s prematurity will be minimal, if any, but we know that many other families may not be as fortunate. So we walk and donate to help minimize the chance that any family has to endure the kind of road we and others have already traveled.
