Meet the Cruz family

On September 25, 2008 when I was 29 weeks and 5 days I woke up feeling like I had the flu. Since I had an appointment scheduled for that day, I decided just to rest and ask about it when I went in. I had no idea that later that night we would be meeting our precious little girl. After much debating and an ultrasound they determined I needed an emergency C-section. The doctor told me that the placenta was detaching and they had to deliver right away. Within minutes I was out and our baby was born. I woke up to my midwife telling me I had a beautiful girl. She then went to get Dan to come and see me. He was so happy. He told me that Haley was doing well. I will never forget the first time I saw her. She was 2 lbs 9.6 oz and 15 in. She was beautiful and perfect. I had never seen a baby so tiny before. Even as small as she was she was fully formed and just so cute. It was love at first sight. Haley had a few battles during her stay in the NICU. She was on CPAP, which she was not too fond of. She also had PDA, Patent Ductus Arteriosis. The medication for the PDA caused her to swell up and retain water. It got severe enough they decided to stop after just 2 doses. Miraculously when they checked her PDA, fully thinking she would need surgery, it was closed! Through our entire stay in the NICU there was one person we are forever grateful for. Our NICU had a NICU family support specialist funded by the March of Dimes. She is amazing! She organized activities for our 2 year son to help him feel included. She also organized parent educational hours where we learned about first aid/CPR, RSV, and understanding the signs and signals our baby is giving us. Even more than those things, she was there for us. When we needed someone to lean on during the scary times she was there. Our time in the NICU would have been very different had we not had her as a part of it. And it is because of Christy that we give back.
