The Forry Family
The Forry Family
Like many expectant parents Dwight and Kelly Forry were excited about starting their family. But then their baby, Kayla, was born 14 weeks early, weighing just 2 pounds, 1 ounce. Kayla’s prognosis was grim. She suffered from respiratory distress, a minor heart defect, and required several blood transfusions. Kayla spent her first 13 weeks fighting for life in a newborn intensive care unit (NICU).
It was a difficult time for the Forry family. Spending time in the NICU can be frightening and overwhelming for parents, especially when they must go home each night and leave their precious baby behind. The Forrys relied heavily on their strong faith and the information they received from the March of Dimes to get them through Kayla’s NICU stay.
After 13 weeks and 3 days in the NICU, Kayla was finally able to come home. Today, she is joined by little sister, Delaney Forry, also a preemie. Delaney was born 6 weeks early and spent 18 days in the NICU
Premature babies are not just small babies. They are babies who are not ready to be born, and they require specialized care to help them thrive. March of Dimes funded the research on surfactant therapy and nitric oxide, two applications that help underdeveloped lungs of preterm babies to breathe easier. Since the development of these two therapies, two-thirds of the babies who would have died from respiratory distress syndrome now survive their early birth.
Premature birth touches nearly half a million babies and their families each year. Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities. The March of Dimes is committed to reducing this toll by funding research to find the causes of premature birth and providing comfort and information to families.
Dwight and Kelly know the significant role that March of Dimes research played in helping their girls overcome preemie baby obstacles. As the 2015 Lancaster Ambassador Family they will share their story and help raise awareness of premature birth. They hope their story can provide hope for other families and help the March of Dimes to reach the day when all babies are born strong and healthy.
