Meet Romy
Meet Romy
Tara and Mark Mitchell were expecting their second child and had already endured a difficult complicated pregnancy when Tara went into labor at 30 weeks, 3 days. Romy Patricia Mitchell was born March 29th, 2014, just 2 hours after Tara was admitted to the hospital. Tara got to hold Romy briefly but she was soon whisked away because she needed to be intubated, as she couldn't breathe on her own.
Romy had a typical NICU stay, dealing with breathing issues and eating issues. The Mitchells celebrated little milestones and then had little setbacks. On day 26, Tara was at the hospital at by 9am, which was routine, where she held her baby girl for a while. Tara left and went home for lunch, excited to get her Mother’s Day necklace in the mail. Tara returned to the NICU for the afternoon, where her husband joined her. Before they left the Nurse Practitioner checked Romy and she was doing fine. They left the hospital and went to dinner with their son.
While at dinner Tara missed a call from the NICU. Romy’s nurse that day sounded different and told them, they needed to get back to the NICU immediately and that Romy wasn’t doing well. Tara asked if she was okay and the nurse responded, “No, she had to be intubated and they are giving her CPR now.” They rushed back to the hospital and prayed the whole way that she would be okay. Tara sprinted ahead to get up there as fast as she could, as Mark rounded up their son. The doctor and nurses were surrounding Romy. Her isolette was completely off, they were giving her CPR, they were trying to save her life. Tara and Mark finally decided to let them stop working on her, as they had done everything they could to try and save her. Romy passed away April 24th, 2014.
Tara comments, "Our lives were completely different from the second we knew she was gone. Our lives will never be the same. Though she only lived a short life she changed ours forever. It is amazing the impact someone so small can have on so many people. She continues to touch the lives of others and we hope that one day through the money we help raise for the March of Dimes in her memory that no other family will have to go through the loss of a baby."
