On February 20, 2009, my life was forever changed when my baby, Sofia Rose, was born. I had developed a severe form of preeclampsia called HELLP Syndrome at 29 weeks. She had to be delivered immediately to have a chance of saving both of our lives. Sofia was delivered via emergency C-section and came into this world 11 weeks too soon, weighing a mere 2.2 pounds. She was not breathing when she was born, so she had to be hooked up to a ventilator. During the next 3 months that she was hospitalized in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU), she was diagnosed with Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Severe GERD and anemia. It was many weeks before she was able to breathe without medical assistance or eat without a feeding tube. After 87 days in the NICU, Sofia was discharged, weighing 5 pounds. The very treatments that Sofia had in the NICU were made possible by the March of Dimes. So, I decided I had be a part of this wonderful organization, because without them, Sofia might not be here. Today, Sofia loves to dance and she is a huge fan of S.U. Basketball and “Otto the Orange”! She plays soccer, enjoys arts and crafts, as well as playing board games.
