The Pedro Family

On June 18, 2011, our first-born decided he was ready to enter the world after only 23 weeks gestation. I developed an infection brought on by a tear on the placenta. Mason Joseph Pedro was born and though tiny, he was perfect in every way. He lived for two hours and we held him the entire time. A few months later, we discovered that we were pregnant with twins. Thanks to advances made available by the March of Dimes, I received weekly shots to help prolong the pregnancy. Unfortunately, at 25 weeks, the amniotic sac for Twin A, our little girl, ruptured. Lily Marie was born first, weighing 1 lb., 8 oz. and crying. Our son, Lucas Mason, followed via emergency C-section and weighed 1 lb., 13 oz., but he did not cry. On their 12th day of life, our Lily girl developed an infection in her intestines and she passed away a few hours later. Lucas also became very ill, but the doctors saw the warning signs and prevented any further damage. Lucas was discharged after 88 days in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU). He is now a happy, healthy, amazing toddler who lives every moment to the fullest and has an amazing smile. We just know his brother and sister are watching over him every day.
