Delma Austin and parents Thirchrista and Samuel

THE JOURNEY Early on the morning of May 25, 2011 my husband and I awoke overly excited as we had a doctor’s appointment to find out the gender of our 23 week old baby. I made my way out of bed to begin my day and noticed that I began spotting. My husband suggested that we called the doctor to see if we could move our appointment earlier that morning. Due to previous miscarriages, my doctor suggested that we go to the hospital’s Labor and Delivery to be on the safe side. I was admitted and within one hour of being admitted to the hospital, my water broke and I gave birth to Samone Chrisette Austin barely weighing 1 pound. She only lived 4 hours and we were heartbroken. The emptiness of carrying a baby, delivering a baby and leaving the hospital without a baby was indescribable. My husband and I felt lost and alone. Only time could heal our pain and we leaned family, friends and each other for support. Thanksgiving weekend 2012, my husband and I found out we were expecting. We were both excited and terrified at the same time especially since we still did not know why Samone was born so early or what we could do to prevent the same nightmare from reoccurring. I was nervous throughout the pregnancy my anxiousness caused several visits to the emergency room. Each visit ended with a positive report and me being sent back home. During the wee hours of the morning on March 14, 2013 at exactly 22.5 weeks, I thought my amniotic sac was leaking so I was off to the hospital’s Labor and Delivery to be checked out. Once I arrived at the hospital, the ultrasound technician was measuring the amount of amniotic fluid I had when my doctor walked in. It was during this time that my doctor shared that my amniotic fluids were fine but my cervix was barely there. I would have to be on bedrest in the hospital for the remainder of my pregnancy if I stood any chance of prolonging going into labor. Exactly two weeks after being placed on bedrest in the hospital, my water broke. Delmar Xavier Austin was born at 24.5 weeks weighing 1 pound 11 ounces. His cry sounded like a mouse squeaking and he looked around as if he was trying to figure out what all of the commotion was about. We spent a total of 97 days in the NICU at Germantown Methodist hospital. During his stay, I used the internet and the readily available resources at the hospital to understand all that happened and what I could expect. Nothing or no one could have prepared us for giving birth to a preemie. The information and life changing research for premature babies provided by The March of Dimes made things much more bearable. On behalf of Delmar and family, Thank you!
