Meet Zoey and Zayden

When I flew home from Germany for a two-week vacation, my doctor assured me that I would be fine. I was in the second trimester of a healthy pregnancy with twins. I flew home on Monday, and two days later, at just 26 weeks, I went into pre-term labor. After going to the ER in Blairsville, I was transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta, where they were dedicated to providing the best care possible. No one could determine a health cause for pre-term labor, so the plan was to keep me on bed rest and to make it to 28 weeks, but my daughter had plans of her own. On Saturday, March 21, 2009, thanks to that plan, Zoey and Zayden were born by emergency C-Section. Zoey weighed 1 lb., 14 oz. From day one, she’s been strong-willed. The nurses would tell me that she ran the NICU some days because of her demands. She always seemed to know how to grab their attention. At four days old, she pulled her own intubation tube out, and she hasn’t lost that strength since. She was diagnosed with a heart murmur caused by an Atrial Septal Defect, which required several trips to Sibley Heart Center after her release from the NICU. We were extremely fortunate to learn at her 3 year checkup that this hole had closed on its own, and no surgery would be needed. She has surpassed physical and mental milestones along the way, always making sure she puts her best foot forward. Today, Zoey is energetic and happy. She is thriving in Kindergarten, where they are testing her for the school’s gifted program. She loves to read, sing, and dance and is playing soccer this year, too! Zayden weighed 2 lb., 3 oz. at birth, but quickly lost 4 oz. The NICU nurses struggled every day to keep is oxygen level up and his stress level down. He set off alarms like crazy, and because of his temperament, we were unable to hold him until he was over 6 weeks old. As a mother, I felt completely helpless, but Zayden never quit fighting. He is our fighter, the one who reminds us that no matter how bad things might seem, you should never give up, because once you win the fight, something great happens. That something great is Zayden. Although he was diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity, we later discovered that he has astigmatism, and wears glasses to help improve this! He hasn’t quite caught up with the rest of his age group in size, but Zayden is such a loving child and an intelligent Kindergartener. He loves to build with Legos and loves to create things. His biggest accomplishment in school this year has been learning how to read, and he is also playing soccer this year! Our journey in the NICU was not something we could have prepared for. It was new and unfamiliar and overwhelming. The staff at Grady was incredible and somehow made the NICU feel like home for us. The nurses treated us like family and the doctors were considerate and helpful. It was here that my family was introduced to the March of Dimes organization. We learned about why it was created and about the fight for healthy babies and full term pregnancies. Our family team was created in 2009 and we joined our first March for Babies in April of that year. We continue to raise money and awareness every year for the March of Dimes. The Z Twins were born 14 weeks early and given a 50% survival chance, but had no problem beating that statistic because of the medical care that was available to them. I believe that it is important to support the March of Dimes so that the research can continue for medicines and treatments that might give other babies a fighting chance.
