Meet Madelyn

Madelyn’s Miracle Story Madelyn Elaine Adams’s life itself is a miracle. In her three years we have been blessed with the opportunity to witness God’s healing power time and time again. When doctors say she cannot and she never will, Madelyn can and she does. God has no limitations and continues to demonstrate his power through her inspirational successes. She has been my greatest teacher and Madelyn often declares that she is an angel sent to the earth to save Mommy for Jesus. God has not only used her healing to save me, but also to open the eyes of many others. Madelyn was born fourteen weeks early after three weeks of pregnancy with no amniotic fluid. The lack of amniotic fluid resulted in the arrestment of lung development at twenty-three weeks of pregnancy. Because of her severely underdeveloped lungs, the doctors did not expect her to make it through the first night. But little did we know, God had other plans and this is where her miraculous story begins. Day after day Madelyn battled many obstacles as we experienced the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit roller coaster. As we walked through these daily challenges, God was constantly at work. Many angels disguised as doctors and nurses were strategically placed in Madelyn’s life. These medical professionals not only cared for the medical needs of a very sick baby, but also supported the family when it seemed hopeless to continue. It was as if God had hand picked these people to carry out his plan for Madelyn. We were even so blessed to have the senior doctor take Madelyn as his personal project. He was touched by the way Madelyn always smiled with adoring eyes as he opened her bed. It was as if Madelyn knew the doctor’s role in her life before he was made aware. Cherie, her favorite nurse, grew to truly love Madelyn and never left her side. Even on her days off, she would call to see how Madelyn was doing. I believe that this God given love was a strong healing force and Cherie is still part of our family today. There was also a special respiratory therapist that carried her bible by her side as she prayed for Madelyn and I daily. It was this therapist that carried me during the times that I lost the strength to walk on my own. With all of this loving care it is no surprise that Madelyn began to slowly develop and heal and it seemed that her hospital stay was going to be shorter than expected. Then Madelyn was diagnosed with MRSA pneumonia: a staff infection that traditional antibiotics could not fight. Because her lungs were so immature, the infection destroyed the fragile lung tissue she had developed. We helplessly watched, as Madelyn grew sicker and sicker and grieved as this infection took the life of the baby in the bed beside her. I was filled with fear and any faith that I had was diminishing. Then early one morning, I received the dreaded phone call. Cherie said that I needed to get to the hospital immediately. There was nothing else they could do and Madelyn was dying. When I hung up the phone, I dropped to my knees and begged God, “ Please do not take my daughter”. I do not know how many times I cried for his help but I remember that was my most urgent plea. As I began to get dressed, I collapsed on my bed and as I lay there the feeling to connect with her spirit overwhelmed me. The spirit I came to know when I was pregnant. The message was clear. I was to focus on her precious spirit rather than her physical limitations. As I rushed to the hospital, I made a promise to God that if she lived, I would raise her to know him and she would be a living testimony to him. For the first time, I knew that everything was going to be O.K. When I arrived at the hospital, I saw our family minister in the lobby of the intensive care unit. Not knowing Madelyn’s condition, he had decided to stop by the unit to say a prayer for her. After speaking with the nurses, he too began to prepare me for Madelyn’s death. My heart would not hear nor believe a word that was spoken. As we entered her room, I could feel the desperation. Cherie met me at the door and I asked her if I could open Madelyn’s bed. When I did, I began to speak to Madelyn rather than concentrate on the many tubes and lines that covered her tiny body. I could no longer hear the piercing alarms and bells that usually filled her room. I spoke to her with all the love a mother could muster and I pleaded for her to continue to fight because God had a special plan for her and her life. As I spoke to her that day I felt no fear, only a divine love and faith. When I closed her bed, I was filled with a peace that I had never before experienced and although I knew that everyone would think I was irrational, I turned to Cherie and with much confidence announced that Madelyn was going to get better. Cherie still had her doubts so she suggested that we baptize Madelyn and we agreed. Immediately following her baptism, Madelyn’s lungs began to improve. Her oxygen saturations began to incr
