Meet Colton

It was the summer and 2009 and we decided we were ready to expand our family. After months of trying, we had almost given up hope when Dr. Nour told us to give it one more month and then we would pursue fertility testing. That must have been the nudge my body needed as we got the positive test that February. The pregnancy was uneventful at first. No morning sickness, no fatigue, perfect blood pressure, it was a text book pregnancy. All that changed the day of the 3D ultra sound. The tech noticed that my fluid levels were extremely low. She brought Dr. Nour in who decided that we needed to start monitoring me a little closer. So, I started pushing fluids and did non-stress tests twice a week. I also did two rounds of steroid shots “Just in case” to help develop Colton’s lungs. Things started improving, and we decided that since I was “behaving” we could reduce the non-stress testing to once a week. Thursday September 16th at 4:30 am, I had my first contraction. An hour later, I had another contraction. They weren’t anything to write home about, so I assumed they were Braxton hicks contractions. I was wrong. I was checked and had already dilated to 3. This couldn’t be happening. We were still 6 weeks away from our due date! 13 hours after the first contraction, Colton was here. 5lbs, 5oz and 19 inches long. He was beautiful. I remember getting my hands on him for a few seconds before he was whisked away to the NICU. While our stay in the NICU was short, it was eventful. He stopped breathing that first night and we learned he needed to concur the suck, swallow, breathe reflex. Not only that, but his little body had to learn how to maintain his temperature. The day we walked into the NICU and he was out of the incubator and in a regular bed we were thrilled. My passion for the March of Dimes can be accredited to one night while we were in the NICU for the night time feeding, there was a knock on the door and there stood this little boy with his family and gift bags that were made for the families in the NICU compliments of the March of Dimes full of goodies to help make our stay a little less painful. This small gesture gave us hope. This year, will be our 4th year in walking in the March for Babies with Colton’s Crazy Crew and I’ve had one rotation in creating and delivering the NICU bags. I can say, it gave me chills walking thru those doors and hearing the monitors beeping. Reminded me how lucky we are to have such a perfectly healthy 4 year old today!
