Meet James
Meet James
“We have to take your baby now or there is a chance you both will not survive”. Scary words to hear for any parent, but especially for me since I was only 28 weeks along and the ultrasound showed him to weigh less than 2 pounds. I knew that no matter what happened that day, my baby might not survive.
At 28 weeks gestation I was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia. A condition common to pregnancy but not as early or severe as mine was. The only cure for pre-eclampsia is to deliver the baby. My blood pressure was high enough that my blood was clotting, blocking off vital oxygen and nutrients to my son. The only thing that saved my child was the grace of God and the research provided by the March of Dimes.
On January 24th, 2002 James was born at 1 pound 5 oz. The days before his delivery I was given shots to help open his lungs, which were not developed yet, and told to prepare for the worst. On top of his early gestational age James also suffered IUGR (Intra-uterine growth retardation). His body had not developed at a normal pace for his age which caused additional complications. The doctor’s said if he came out crying then there was hope. Thank God James came out screaming!
The shots administered before his delivery, crucial surfactant therapy, the care received in the NICU, and the doctor’s knowledge of advanced research and practices were all made possible by the March of Dimes.
James spent 3 months in the NICU and did suffer a brain hemorrhage due to oxygen deprivation in the womb. Because of this hemorrhage he has Cerebral Palsy and suffers from multiple seizure disorders, but the March of Dimes has been with him since day one. Our family has supported the March of Dimes since I was a kid, and now we give back everything we can. Not only did they save my son but the knowledge I gained from their research as a mother helped me to make informed decisions that kept the same thing from happening to my daughter as well. I am a life-long supporter of this amazing organization!
