Josh & Mae Davis, Elizabethtown, KY At 25 weeks gestation, I experienced a placental abruption and had to undergo an emergency cesarean section. Our twins, Makenna and Andrew were born 15 weeks early on 7/11/09. Makenna arrived into this world at 1 lb. 9 oz. and 12 1/2" long while Andrew was 1 lb. 10.7 oz. and 12 1/4" long. Both babies underwent the heart surgery common to preemies - PDA ligation. Both had jaundice and spent time under bilirubin lights for what seemed like forever. Due to their unexpected early births, both children also have Chronic Lung Disease. Both children were on ventilators, then CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure), and graduated to the nasal cannula for supplemental oxygen. They also have Retinopathy due to prematurity. Andrew has an undetermined degree of hearing loss and also had a grade 4 intracranial hemorrhage that eventually resolved itself over time. Makenna came home after 110 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Progressive Care Unit. She came home hooked up to an apnea monitor. Andrew came home after 125 days in the NICU/PCU. He remained on supplemental oxygen until May 2011 and has been diagnosed with asthma. Today, my twins are 5 years old and are in Kindergarten. While they have mild developmental delays, they are active and healthy overall. You would never know how much they have endured in their short lives if you met them. We feel fortunate and blessed by the medical staff and medical technology that truly gave our babies a fighting chance at life. Looking back at our NICU days, we have so much to be grateful for. I never imagined that my children who lived in incubators hooked up to monitors with wires covering their tiny bodies would thrive like they have. We were told in the beginning that life as a NICU parent is a roller coaster ride. We certainly experienced the peaks and valleys of that roller coaster, but are grateful for the end result.
