Our ambassador

Jakob Burdick

My name is Jakob, I am 11 years old, and I am a very lucky kid. While I have had some luck in winning contests and sports, my luck is much bigger than that. I'm lucky to be alive. I was born 13 weeks early at KMC. My mom and dad had no idea I was coming that day; they thought they had 3 more months to wait; I was quite a surprise. I only weighted 2 pounds 7 ounces and my lungs were not quite ready for the real world. A few hours after I was born, I was transferred to MVH's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where I lived for the next 99 days. I am told there were days they didn't think I was going to make it. I look very sick in some of the pictures they took. I was on and off different breathing machines, had many needle sticks, received blood transfusions, and several specialized medications. But I was lucky to have incredible people helping me grow. My family and I can never thank the healthcare team, from both hospitals, enough for getting us through those first few hours, days, and months. We were amazed by the level of medical care and the passionate support of all the technicians, doctors and nurses that we have met. Like my incredible primary nurse from the NICU, Nurse Jessie. In fact, the therapists have inspired my parents so much that my dad went back to school. This May he will be graduating from Sinclair Community College as a respiratory therapist. I have given him a bit of practive, since I have asthama. I also wish to thank the March of Dimes and their donors. Many of the medical technologies that helped me survive were developed with money raised by the March of Dimes. It takes a lot of money, a lot of time, and a lot of brains to study all of this. That is why I am really grateful to have been chosen as an ambassador for the March of Dimes. It is an important mission: working together for stronger healthier babies. My parents have shared with me that not all babies (and their parents) are as lucky as we are, and that makes me really sad. I hope the researchers can keep discovering new things about prematurity, so that all kids can be as lucky as I am. Thank you for supporting the March of Dimes!
