Ava Robinson

2015 Metro East Ambassador Family: Chris and Mandy Robinson and daughter, Ava Before Ava was born, I had two healthy, mostly uneventful pregnancies. I could never have imagined that my third would be any different. However, at 24 weeks, I was sent to Gateway Regional Medical Center to be evaluated for some side pain and to check my amniotic fluid. I was sure that nothing was wrong, and I would spend the next 16 weeks at home waiting for my baby girl to come. Upon arrival at the hospital, it was quickly realized that my amniotic fluid was leaking and very low. I was given steroids and transferred to SSM St. Mary’s Medical Center by ambulance. I spent 12 days there on bedrest. On August 14, 2011 at 9:04pm at 25 weeks gestation, Ava Elizabeth Robinson decided to join us. She was born weighing 1 pound, 9 ounces and was 13 inches long. She was taken to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center where she spent 84 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Thanks to March of Dimes funded research, Ava was given surfactant to help her lungs develop and was able to be taken off her ventilator as early as 14 hours after she entered the NICU. Throughout our long stay at the hospital, we had a few scares with her digestion and required a few necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) workups. After a while, her little body started growing and she was able to come home a few weeks before her due date. She weighed less than 5 pounds. Ava is a fighter. She fought for her life when she was a newborn, and now at 3 years old, she is as strong and tough as anyone I have ever met. She is very healthy and spunky. She attends preschool, knows her colors, sings her ABCs and is very curious. Ava is alive and well, because of the March of Dimes. She is a champion, but the support and research of this organization saved her life.
