We were blessed with Aubrey Jane and Bailey Lynn Highlander joining our family on March 9, 2013. G.R.A.B. stands for the first initials of our children in the exact order that they were born; Grant-2008, Rory-2012, Aubrey-2013, and Bailey-2013. Our story is different from many of the stories you hear from babies born pre-mature. Aubrey and Bailey were born at 35 weeks and both of them weighed over 5 pounds each. For the most part, they were healthy and had a short stay in the NICU of just 6 days. Our doctors and nurses had the information that they needed to make good decisions regarding our beautiful girls. From the time we found out that we were having twins we had feelings of joy, but there were also many feelings of fear and uncertainty; we didn’t know what to expect. Our doctors and nurses were there every step of the way. A pregnancy with multiples REALLY does multiply everything!! After the girls were born they were quickly taken to the NICU for assessment and evaluation. Aubrey came up to our room shortly after. However, her visit was short lived and she returned to the NICU as she was having difficulty breathing. We found out later that she had aspirated when she was born. I will never forget when they came and made the decision to have her return to the NICU. I was overcome with panic; one of the nurses could see that, and she assured me that everything was going to be fine and the NICU was the best place for the girls. She was right; the girls had everything they needed, we were on a schedule, and even though the girls were in the NICU, it was an amazing experience that I will never forget. We were never so prepared to take our boys home, but we had so much support with the girls that it was a smooth transition back home. Our experience in the NICU was a short 6 days, but we believe without the research from March of Dimes we could have been telling a very different story. We had the opportunity to be surrounded by fabulous doctors and nurses through the length of the pregnancy, through labor, and after the birth of Aubrey and Bailey. March of Dimes allowed us to have a healthy pregnancy, 2 healthy little girls, and knowledge (through research efforts) on behalf of doctors and nurses that can’t be replaced. Team G.R.A.B. is extremely fortunate to be a part of such a fabulous organization that has the sole goal of ensuring every baby is born healthy. We are blessed to have four healthy, beautiful, and happy children.
