I march because I know what it feels like to pray for a child you haven’t even met yet.
Long before I ever put on the Black and Old Gold, I understood that family is the first community we ever belong to. It’s where we learn love, resilience, and hope. But I also learned early that not every family gets to experience those moments without fear. I’ve watched people I care about navigate complicated pregnancies, unexpected hospital stays, and the quiet, heavy worry that comes when a baby arrives too soon. Those moments stay with you. They shape you.
So when I became a Brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., I found language for something I had always felt: that our purpose is to stand in the gap for others. Since 1906, Alpha men have been called to serve, to uplift, and to protect the vulnerable. Our partnership with the March of Dimes is not just a national initiative—it is a continuation of our oath. It is the work of men who believe that every child deserves a fighting chance and every mother deserves support, dignity, and care.
For me, this mission is personal. I march for the families who sit in NICU waiting rooms holding onto hope. I march for the parents who carry both joy and fear in the same breath. I march for the babies who arrive early but fight with everything in them. And I march for the families in our community—especially Black mothers and infants—who face health disparities that should never exist in the first place.
The Steel City Alphas march because we refuse to accept those disparities as normal. We march because our founders taught us that leadership is service. We march because our community deserves better outcomes, better resources, and better support.
