In March of 1988, I started to work on my very first March of Dimes walk - then called WalkAmerica. As a staff member, I was recruiting corporate teams in northeastern Massachusetts to walk through the old mill town of Lawrence and surrounding areas, working with an Eagle Scout candidate to mark the route, soliciting sponsorships for rest stops, and learning about the March of Dimes' history and mission along the way. That walk was a huge success, and I have been involved in March of Dimes walks every year since then.
A couple of things surprised me as I met with long-time volunteers in my new territory: one was that these folks were incredibly loyal to the cause; another was that many of them didn't really know what that cause was. Re-educating these volunteers both re-energized them and introduced me to health education as a career.
With preterm birth and maternal death rates continuing to rise, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, especially for women and babies of color. The funds we raise in the March for Babies support research and education that saves people's lives. Please help me reach my goal of raising $7,000 to prevent premature birth.
Thank you for your support for all of these years!
