I went into pre-term labor at 26 weeks. My first pregnancy, I did not know what was going on, I decided to go to the hospital to make sure everything was ok. Upon arrival, doctors realized I was in labor. Everything happened so quickly, I was taken to the O.R for an emergency C-section. Not knowing what was going on was agonizing. I did not hear him cry and immediately started to worry. He was quickly taken, I did not get a chance to hold him like most moms do after giving birth. I was taken to the recovery room and a doctor came in to explain what had just happened. I will never forget her words, "there is a possibility he may be blind or deaf or have other developmental issues". I started to cry, still in disbelief of what had just happened. He was taken to the NICU, where he spent four months. I was very happy with the NICU, the staff was always friendly and welcoming. I was able to visit 24/7 and felt comfortable leaving him because I knew he was in good hands.
My son will be 18 years old in a few months and will be graduating from high school! If you see him now, you would never know he came into this world at only 2 lbs, fighting for dear life! The March of Dimes is a cause that I will forever support because it holds a special place in my heart.
