“Sometimes it’s okay if all you did today was breathe”. As a NICU nurse who works alongside moms, birthing parents, and babies, I understand how crucial equitable care is for little babies who are just starting their lives. The Renee Schine Crown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Northwestern serves not only families in the greater Chicagoland area, but see’s families come from around the world seeking better medical care and life expectancy outcomes. While I am fortunate enough to work on a unit that tends to a wide array of needs for families I am dishearteningly aware of the maternal and infant heath disparities that exist, especially for families of color.I am teaming with March of Dimes, an organization that strives to end preventable maternal health risks, death, end preventable preterm birth and infant death, and close the health equity gaps for all families. Your donations will help fund research, provide vital education for families, and make a difference in giving babies the best start at life. Work doesn’t feel like work when you love doing what you do. My passion and dedication to my patients and their lives on and outside of this unit is a testament to how I believe everyone should approach these issues.
