I was most recently approached and asked why I continue to lead this effort. Every year, I think about this question, and this year in particular I am even more grateful than the previous ones. Simply said, I believe and will assist, in any way possible, in their mission to end preventable maternal and infant health risks and death while closing health equity gaps.
Many of you know me as a colleague, but some of you may not be aware that this mission is not only professional but deeply personal for me. I lost my dear cousin Chante to a maternal medical error in 2009; then two years ago my grandniece, Willow entered this world unexpectedly, in an unplanned home delivery at 24 weeks gestation. Her mother was high-risk, but her concerns were dismissed and ignored. The March for Babies Walk is now sandwiched between both of these events in my family's memories reigniting my passion, purpose, and vision for a world where giving birth should not be so scary for some people. Both instances continue to fuel my compassion and commitment to closing health equity gaps and improving morbidity and mortality rates, particularly among those who are Black, and suffer disproportionate rates of disparaging care.
Please meet our precious little miracle, Ms. Willow..." a graceful and elegant tree, known to grow and prosper despite unfavorable conditions"
