Did you know that premature birth is the #1 killer of babies in the United States? I'm on a mission to change that.
Our family knows firsthand the challenges of having a baby born too soon. Liam was born 2 months early, by emergency c-section, at exactly 32 weeks, after a 4-day attempt to stop labor and severe bleeding due to Placenta Previa. While he was born at a hefty 4 lbs 10.8 oz, and did not need oxygen, he spent 6 weeks in the NICU trying to overcome feeding issues. His feeding issues continued after being released from the NICU. At 3 months of age, Liam was diagnosed with Hirschsprung Disease, a congenital disease where nerve cells of the colon do not develop. In the last year, he has had to go through 3 contrast barium enemas, 4 rectal biopsies, 4 hospital stays, major surgery to remove the bad part of his colon, 3 rounds of Botox shots to relax the muscles of the rectum, and more doctor appointments than we can count. At home, we spent 5 months having to do colonic irrigations twice a day to keep Liam from developing enterocolitis, and we still have to manage his digestive system with medicines and a special diet. It has been a roller coaster ride from the beginning, but we are happy to report that today he is a happy, feisty toddler who is always on the go!
With preterm birth rates continuing to rise, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, especially for women and babies of color.
At March for Babies™ you're lifting up communities, creating connections and taking action to make America a more equitable place and ensure that every mom and baby is healthy.
Together, we’re marching to raise funds and awareness to transform the health of all families!
