On December 22, 2022, my husband and I were blessed with two perfect little girls, Madison Grace and Makenna Lynn. Early on in our pregnancy we found out we were having Monochorionic diamniotic (Mo-Di) twins. We learned about all the risks that come with Mo-Di twins and knew we were going to have a long journey ahead. At only 16 weeks our girls were diagnosed with Twin-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). Madison had significantly less amniotic fluid than Makenna and her blood flow was not strong. Then, at 28 weeks, we were diagnosed with selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR). Madison had become more than 25% smaller than Makenna. Our girls continued to fight throughout the pregnancy and impressed the doctors each week by beating the odds. At 33 weeks, I started showing signs for preeclampsia and the doctors decided it was time to meet our girls.
Madison and Makenna were born at just over 3 and 4 pounds, but were healthier than we could've hoped for. They spent 20 days in the NICU growing and learning how to eat until we were able to bring them home on the same day. Our girls are now happy and healthy at 15 months old.
While we walk to celebrate our girls, we also walk in honor of all the babies and families that have been mission impacted. March of Dimes is an amazing organization that leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies. They support research, lead programs and provide education and advocacy so that every family can have the best possible start. We hope that you will join our team and walk with us on April 14, 2024. Even if you aren't able to join us for the walk, please consider making a donation to our team. Making a secure donation is easy: just click the 'donate now' button on this page. Thank you in advance for your support! Andy, Alicia, Madison and Makenna Hickmann
With preterm birth rates continuing to rise, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, especially for women and babies of color.
At March for Babies™ you're lifting up communities, creating connections and taking action to make America a more equitable place and ensure that every mom and baby is healthy.
Together, we’re marching to raise funds and awareness to transform the health of all families!
