I am a NICU Nurse and a NICU Mom. I joined in support of the precious NICU babies I take care of each time I go into work! I joined because of special care I and my precious babies received. Our first baby was born at 32 weeks , she was bagged in the delivery room, stimulated, suctioned and when she was stable she was transferred to our NICU. She was placed on Hood oxygen and had umbilical lines placed. She eventually started being tube feed and had to go under phototherapy. She received excellent care in our NICU.
I started when I was coming to work on Christmas Eve when my water broke. Everyone thought I was trying to get out of working but no she was coming early. But they held me off for a few days to give me Celestone to help her lungs mature, then Hillary was born 3 days after Christmas 1987.
Our second child was born early in June 1989. He was so active and kicking a lot. My water broke early again this time at 23 weeks. Ryan Marshall weighed 1 pound 3.9 ounces (565 grams). They did try to intubate him but he was to small. We held him til he passed away in my arms. My mother said she remembered seeing him change colors. His life was short but so very precious.
Not long after Ryan’s due date passed, I found out I was pregnant.
I started having issues at 11 weeks , they said my cervix was already thinning out and I needed a cerclage and went on bed rest from December to June. John was born at 38 weeks and taken newborn nursery. He wasn’t there long before he was transferred to our NICU and placed on hood oxygen.
I am very grateful for the special care all our little ones received.
I have worked at Prisma Health Baptist for over 45 years, starting in Newborn as nurse Tech then after graduation from Nursing School went to NICU as my first stop of 3 of my internship then asked to stay there!
I have enjoyed working in the NICU. You never stop learning . I plan to retire next year and I know I will miss it!
I joined the movement to create positive change for moms and babies everywhere, especially those most at risk.
With preterm birth and maternal death rates continuing to rise, I’m committed to raising funds so that every family gets the best possible start. But I need your help.
Please visit my fundraising page to make a donation. Together we’ll be part of a movement to make America a more equitable place and ensure that every mom and baby is healthy.
March of Dimes is dedicated to bringing people together to tackle America's maternal and infant health crisis—one person, one community, and one step at a time. More than a series of walks, March for Babies is an annual tradition that supports moms and babies every day, every step of the way.
March for Babies connects friends, families, and coworkers to improve the health of families nationwide. Together with March of Dimes, each step forward brings us closer to a healthy future for all.
