Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. The funds we raise in WalkAmerica support research that saves babies' lives. The nurses in the Intensive Care Nursery at the University of Pennsylvania are walking together as the "Penn Preemie Pride" team. In our daily work, we witness, firsthand, the struggles that premature and sick babies, and their families endure.
With preterm birth rates continuing to rise, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, especially for women and babies of color.
