Kinsley’s Story 💜
Hi everyone!
My name is Kinsley Cayden, and I just celebrated my 2nd birthday this past January!
I’d love to share a little bit about my journey. Before I was even born, doctors discovered that I had Duodenal Atresia, a rare congenital condition that causes a blockage in the small intestine, preventing food or liquids from passing through the digestive system. Because of this, after I was born I wasn’t able to eat or drink like most newborns.
When I was just one week old, I underwent corrective surgery. Thankfully, the procedure was successful, but my journey was far from over. My surgeon shared with my family just how rare my condition is—occurring in only 1 in 300,000 babies. Because I spent so much time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), I developed an oral aversion, making it difficult for me to eat normally.
After nearly three months in the NICU, doctors placed a G-tube in my tummy so I could receive the nutrition I needed and finally go home. After four months of growing stronger and healthier, I was finally discharged from the hospital! Even after leaving the NICU, I continued working hard to build my strength and learn how to eat and drink on my own.
Just before my first birthday, I reached a huge milestone — my G-tube was removed! 🎉
During my time in the hospital, March of Dimes was there to support my family every step of the way. While I focused on getting stronger, they provided comfort, encouragement, and resources to help my parents through an incredibly challenging time.
They gave my family books so they could read to me in the hospital, helping create special moments even while I was in the NICU. They arranged holiday photos when I couldn’t be home to celebrate, giving my family precious memories to hold onto. They also supported my parents with meals and self-care, allowing them to focus all their energy on being by my side.
Most importantly, March of Dimes reminded my family that they were not alone. They showed them that there was an entire community ready to support, encourage, and walk beside them through every step of this journey.
Now, I want to help give back by raising awareness and supporting the incredible work that March of Dimes does for families like mine. 💜
